8 Ways the Modern World Has Complicated our Health

Have you ever wondered how modern luxuries have complicated our health? There are some things that we can’t fully help such as pollution, but there are many things that we can do to help save our health in this complicated world. The key is to simplify.

“In the modern world, we have over-complicated health and nutrition; something our Creator designed to be so simple”

Maegan Tucker

We were created to be in alignment with the pure design of nature and its rhythms and because we are unaligned with nature it is taking a toll on our health. There are so many options in grocery stores that we probably don’t eat seasonally or locally anymore. We don’t get enough outdoor exercise, fresh air, and sunshine. Nature is designed to be healing, we just have to get back to its simplicity.

Due to busy schedules, electricity, and technology, we have become out of sync with our natural circadian rhythm. The human body is designed to live in alignment with night and day, and since we have these obstacles in the way, our hormones are becoming imbalanced. A lot of us seem to be producing too much cortisol at night time and not enough melatonin and it prevents us from sleeping well.

A few ways to reset your circadian rhythm and live by nature’s clock:

  1. Wake with the sun and go to sleep early.
  2. Literally be outside when possible during golden hour. The golden light from the sunrise and sunset can help to balance hormones.
  3. Avoid too much stimulation before bed. Social media is a big one.
  4. Avoid blue-light on screens. Blue light prevents us from producing the sleep hormone melatonin and raises cortisol. Use an app to turn your screen orange and turn the brightness down, or use some blue-light blocking glasses.
  5. Once the sun goes down in the evening, try to not use overhead lights and use dim, golden colored lights. I like using Christmas lights and Himalayan pink salt lamps in the bedroom.

Water used to always come from natural springs or deep water wells. But now, our tap water is filled with fluoride and chlorine. Fluoride has been linked to thyroid conditions, and chlorine is damaging to our gut micro-biome. Try using a reverse osmosis water filter in your home.

We drink artificial soft drinks that are loaded with damaging sugars and empty calories. Consider trying kombucha as an alternative to soda.

Complicated toxic food is everywhere. Pesticides, herbicides, genetically modified organisms, hormones, antibiotics, artificial flavors, sugars, colors, preservatives, flavor enhancers like MSG, the list goes on and on. When you look at it that way it seems so complicated, doesn’t it? Well, it doesn’t have to be. Look at nature and you will find the simple answer. Go to your local farmers market and find a farmer that grows organic and real whole foods. It doesn’t get much more simple than that! Most grocery stores are starting to have certified organic options these days, as well.

Everything that we wear on our body, things that we clean our homes with, and fragrances that we breathe still have to be processed within the body. Artificial fragrance has been shown to be a neurotoxin. I believe that to be true because I personally have to deal with migraines, brain fog, and other symptoms each time I smell any type of artificial fragrance. Whether it be perfume, cleaning products, laundry detergent, shampoo, they all have an effect on me and my family. Do you have headaches and you haven’t been sure what’s causing them? This could be your answer. Make the switch to fragrance-free products and try using 100% pure essential oils. I like the brand Ancient Apothecary.

The internet is wonderful, but it also brings so many complications. We are constantly being bombarded with opinions, different lifestyle strategies, different diets and food plans, etc. and we can become very overwhelmed and even sometimes forget to think for ourselves. We make things so very complicated when it can be so simple: Align with the rhythms and pure design of nature, the way God created it. P.S. That’s our mission here at Purely Flourish, and we’d love for you to be a part of it, too!

Social media, the news, Netflix-series, busy schedules, the hustle-hard culture, decision fatigue… It never ends. The human brain is extremely brilliant but it also wasn’t necessarily meant to consume SO much stimulation from SO many different sources at the same time. Try to slow down and take breaks from these things. Practice being mindful and focus on one thing at a time.

The convenience of refrigeration has kept us from eating an abundance of fermented foods like raw sauerkraut which is extremely good for our gut health due to the beneficial bacteria and enzymes that it provides. Sauerkraut is extremely budget friendly and easy to make at home. Try adding a few tablespoons with your meals!

Everywhere you look, there’s convenience food. Processed fast food restaurants have kept us from eating home cooked food made with real ingredients because it’s just so easy to stop and grab something to eat on the way to work. Here’s a way to change fast food habits: Act like you live in old times before all of this convenience food. What would you do? You would have to prepare your food ahead of time or you simply wouldn’t eat.

There are great doctors and they are surely needed and are appreciated, but the system is broken. We go to the doctor because we have some symptoms going on. They run tests, and based on what they find, we might get a diagnosis, which is basically a name for the symptoms that we have, and most of the time are sent home with some sort of medication to help mask the symptoms. We need to dig deep and fix the root cause, because we simply do not have symptoms for no reason. The human body is extremely intelligent. Listen to what it is trying to tell you. We need healing. We need nourishment. We need balance.

Antibiotics have been so overused in situations where they weren’t necessarily needed and people are becoming resistant and when they are actually in true need of the antibiotics, they won’t be effective anymore. A study was done with patients that have SIBO. 82% of the patients that took probiotics showed clinical improvements and only 52% of the patients that took antibiotics showed improvements. (Study Source)

The astounding difference is that probiotics are very healing to the body, and antibiotics are extremely damaging to the body.

How do you think the modern world has complicated your health? How have you changed that? Let me know in the comments!
