These savory mashed sweet potatoes are an incredibly delicious and creamy side dish for any time of the week or for a special occasion. Sweet potatoes contain healing antioxidants and are rich in vitamin A which promotes healthy eyes and immunity. These are also great spread on top of my Sweet Potato Shepherd’s Pie recipe.
I used to despise sweet potatoes because the only way I “knew” sweet potatoes was when they were smothered in sugar and turned into a sweet dessert! I’d rather have my sweet potatoes savory. They’re so good!
In addition to its incredible flavor, I also love this Savory Mashed Sweet Potatoes recipe because it is:
- Easy: Less than 5 ingredients that you probably already have stocked.
- Healthy: Sweet potatoes are jam-packed full of nutrients like beta-carotene!
- Customizable: You could mix in some roasted garlic, different herbs, and spices, cheese — you name it!
- Freezer friendly: Sweet potato mash freezes well! I like to use reusable glass containers.
- Enjoyed by everyone! It’s a comforting side dish the whole family will enjoy, and it’s a super easy recipe to make for a holiday!
WHAT WILL YOU NEED FOR THIS SAVORY MASHED SWEET POTATOES RECIPE?
- Sweet potatoes: I’m pretty sure you will need some healthy sweet potatoes for this recipe… 😉
- Grass-fed butter or ghee: I used pastured butter, but ghee also works!
- Milk: I used grass-fed whole milk but you could use dairy-free milk as well!
- Seasoning: I just like to season my sweet potatoes with sea salt and black pepper, but you could get creative and use your favorite seasonings!
- Garnish: Garnish with fresh herbs such as parsley, rosemary, or chives. You could also use dried herbs.
- Tools: You will need a peeler to peel the potatoes. I like a Y-peeler like this one. You’ll also need a potato masher.

Description
These savory mashed sweet potatoes are an incredibly delicious and creamy side dish for any time of the week or for a special occasion. Sweet potatoes contain healing antioxidants and are rich in vitamin A which promotes healthy eyes and immunity. These are also great spread on top of my Sweet Potato Shepherd’s Pie recipe.
Ingredients
- 3 pounds sweet potatoes
- 1/4 cup pasture-raised butter or ghee, melted
- 1/4 cup milk (dairy-free milk works as well)
- Sea salt and black pepper, to taste
- Fresh herbs like parsley or chives to garnish
Instructions
- Bring a large pot of filtered water to boil over high heat.
- Peel the sweet potatoes. I like using a Y-peeler.
- Cut the sweet potatoes into large chunks and place them into the pot of boiling water. Cook the potatoes for 20-30 minutes or until the potatoes are fork tender.
- Drain the potatoes over a colander, then place the potatoes in a large mixing bowl and then mash with a potato masher or a fork.
- Add the melted butter or ghee, and the milk into the bowl with the potatoes and mix until creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Garnish with chopped fresh herbs like parsley, and enjoy!
Notes
- Instead of mashing the potatoes manually, you could add in the cooked sweet potatoes, butter, and milk into a high speed blender or food processer and blend for a super smooth and creamy consistency.
- Always try to opt for certified USDA organic ingredients to avoid toxic pesticides and additives.
