I don’t know about you, but I don’t like to spend too much time on my makeup. Give me five or ten minutes and I’m good to go. Maybe you would rather spend more time catching the sunrise in the mornings or eating a good slow breakfast — so here’s a five-minute makeup routine even you can do. And the BEST part is, these products are non-toxic, beautifully formulated, and come from a brand that is big on mission towards safer beauty for everyone.
To me — this is more than just a five-minute makeup routine. This is a movement.
TOXIC BEAUTY INGREDIENTS TO AVOID
The Food and Drug Administration does not require companies to test cosmetics products for safety. While the European Union has banned or restricted more than 1,400 toxic chemicals, the United States has only banned around 30 ingredients. It’s 2020 — we should be able to walk into a store in America and trust that a product is safe for you and your family, but that’s just not the case. Clean beauty brands like BeautyCounter are working hard politically to put in more safety laws within the beauty industry. But in the meantime — we have to do the research, vote with our voices and vote with our dollar for a safer future.
Federal law even allows companies to LEAVE OUT chemical ingredients on a label. Even products labeled natural or organic often contain synthetic, questionable, and harmful ingredients. If a product is labeled with the certified USDA organic seal, there are ingredient regulations — but that doesn’t mean the product is completely safe. The best way to find out whether a product is safe or not is to use the product database at EWG.org. The Environmental Working Group rates individual ingredients on a safety scale based on scientific studies and then they rate the overall product safety. You will be surprised to find out that many of your favorite products contain ingredients that are linked to cancer and contain endocrine (hormone) disrupting chemicals. Thank God for the EWG!
MY FAVORITE CLEAN BEAUTY BRANDS
My two favorite clean beauty brands are BeautyCounter and 100% Pure. I really love and appreciate both companies, but what I love the most about BeautyCounter is that they have many products that are EWG Verified and have a list of over 1,500 chemicals that they NEVER use in their products. You can learn more about The Never List™ here.
DOES IT REALLY ONLY TAKE FIVE MINUTES?
Absolutely! I can get the job done with these six products in ten minutes. Honestly, if I’m taking my time it could take ten minutes — but who am I kidding, that’s still great time, right?!
HOW I PREP MY FACE BEFORE MAKEUP
Before applying my makeup in the mornings I love making sure my skin is clean, toned, moisturized, and um, because I’m skincare obsessed, ya gotta add the serums and oils ya get me? All of these things aren’t necessary, it’s just what I love to do — it’s kind of therapeutic for me. Here’s my quick, non-toxic skincare routine to prep my face for makeup:
- Cleanser: Countermatch Pure Calm Cleansing Milk
- Toner: Countermatch Hydra-Gel Radiance Toner
- Serum: Countermatch Intense Moisture Serum
- Moisturizer: Countermatch Adaptive Moisture Lotion
- Eye Cream: Countermatch Eye Rescue Cream
- Oils: Sea Buckthorn Seed Oil, and Pomegranate Seed Oil (been using these FOR YEARS❤️)
- Primer: 100% Pure Luminous Primer
FIVE MINUTE MAKEUP ROUTINE
FOUNDATION/TINTED MOISTURIZER
I start out with either a foundation or tinted moisturizer depending on the day. If it’s going to be a relaxed errand day, cleaning day, or workday, I’ll probably use the BeautyCounter Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer. If I’m going out — I’ll use either the Tint Skin Hydrating Foundation or the Fruit Pigmented® Full Coverage Water Foundation. I’m torn between the two. I love the consistency of both, the coverage is great, and I’ve had no issues with any sensitivities. I love these both of these products but I’ve yet to find my perfect color match with foundation at 100% Pure. BeautyCounter seemed to hit the right spot but that could be a different experience for you. Like I said — I love both!
I like to use beauty blender dampened with a spritz of rose water (or just water) to apply my foundation. I prefer a beauty blender over a foundation brush because it leaves a more natural, dewy look in my opinion.
CONCEALER
I’ve really been loving the Touchup Skin Concealer Pen in the shade fair. After I’ve applied a tinted moisturizer or foundation all over my face, I’ll use this concealer pen under my eyes and I’ll use my ring finger or the beauty blender to blend.
BROWS
I used to never do my brows, until I learned brows shape the face and make everything come together.
So to fill in my eyebrows, I like the Color Define Brow Pencil in medium, although I might go with light next time. I don’t use a lot — I just lightly draw little lines in the direction of my brow growth to fill in some of those gaps and I use the little brow brush and brush the hairs in a slightly upward direction.
MASCARA
If there’s anything a girl needs — it’s mascara. But in all seriousness, if there’s one makeup item I had to choose from for the rest of my life, it would be mascara. There’s nothing like long, luscious eyelashes. Again, I am torn between two products. I love the BeautyCounter Volumizing Mascara, and the Fruit Pigmented® Ultra Lengthening Mascara. I don’t have the heart to choose my favorite yet — but I have noticed some burning in my eyes when using the 100% Pure mascara. I’m not totally sure it was the mascara, though. So don’t forget that one yet. I still love it.
BLUSH
For cheeks, I just tap on a bit of blush for some color. I use the Satin Powder Blush in Guava. It’s a really pretty color on fair skin tones like mine, although, all of the colors are super beautiful.
LIPS
I don’t always use lip products, but when I do, it’s usually something more moisturizing like this BeautyCounter Lipgloss in the shade Peony.
